Your Guide to Using Awardspace

Have you heard from multiple people that using awardspace is better than Freewebs (or your current web hosting provider?) Do you want to switch over so you can do many things, including skinning your website, but are too confused on how to work it? Well here you go, an in depth guide to

Getting Started

Welcome to awardspace and don't worry, learning to use it is quite simple. After setting up your account, go to the "website manager" section in the toolbar at the top of the screen. Then, either click on the second section on the page or the second link in the left hand navigation, the one that says "subdomain manager". This is where you will type in what you want your site's address to be. For example, Snowickle's address is snowickle.awardspace.com I typed in "snowickle" in the white bar, selected "awardspace.com" from the drop down menu and clicked "add subdomain".

And there you go! You have now set up the place for your website's files to go and you're now ready to move onto the next section.

Familiarizing with the File Manager

Ready to start adding pages to your site? Well first you're going to have to get familiarized with the File Manager. Again under the "Website Manager" part of the site, select the File Manager link. On this page you should see a folder with the name of your site address. (For example, my folder says "snowickle.awardspace.com".) Click on this folder. Now you are in the section where you can add your website pages to! Be sure to add all your webpages INSIDE the folder with your site address on it. If you're a little confused on where you should be, look up a little and you should see something that says "Current folder: /home/www/yoursiteadress.awardspace.com" This means that you are in the first folder you clicked on. There should be two blue folders already there. Just ignore these as they don't really do anything. If this all is still a little bit confusing, don't worry you'll get used to it in time.

Adding Pages

Woot woot! You are finally ready to add webpages. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you will see an option that says "Create File/Folder". Where it says "File Name:" enter your name of the file with a .php ending. You can use .htm and .html but it might create problems for you later if you plan to skinn your website; plus it just makes things less confusing to just name all your webpage files as .php. Now click create file and when the page reload you will be at the part where you can edit the page. This is where you can edit the file; nothing fancy or new, just like how you'd normally edit your webpage. Once you're done click save file and voila! You have a webpage.

Adding Folders & the Use of Them

To add a folder, follow the steps of adding a webpage, only you can't edit a folder. You really only want to use a folder when you're skinning your site, otherwise they pretty much have no use and cause confusion and problems if you try to put your main webpages in them.

If you would like to create a folder to group together your guides and graphics and such, go right ahead. Though DO NOT do this if you plan to skinn your site as the webpages in the folder will not show up skinned. Let's say, for example, you want to group together your guides so your link to one of your guides will be "yoursiteaddress.awardspace.com/guides/yourguidepagename.php". Create a folder with the name "guides" and create all your guide pages there.

I'm allowed more than one Subdomain?

Yes! on your one awardspace account you could manage five different websites! (Though I can't imagine why you'd want to...) If you do want to create another website, just repeat the original steps under getting started. Though this time your subdomain name won't be "youraddress.awardspace.COM" because you've already used the awardspace.com option. This time when you go to create another subdomain, you'll see the other options you have to choose from. Then just repeat the above steps. ^^

FTP Hosting

If you have just installed a program like Cutenews and you need somewhere to host your files, awardspace can do it! The "FTP Manager" section of Awardspace is where you can upload all your cutenews files from your FTP Client and get your cutenews on the web! For more help on installing cutenews, see our Installing Cutenews guide!

Skining Your Website

Yes! If you have been wanting to skin your website like so many others do but haven't had a clue how to do it, you can do it on Awardspace! Skining is where you can select different layouts to your liking to use when you're visiting that website. Snowickle has skins :) For more help on skining your website, see our Website Skining guide!

Other Stuff

The other links on awardspace (like the FrontPage Manager, Zacky Tools Installer, Crontab, etc.) I never really use so I'm not very familiar with them. Though feel free to explore through Awardspace and figure out about everything Awardspace offers.
